Prof. Dr. Shaheen Akhter has been working as a Professor of Paediatric Neurology dept. of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). She completed her MBBS from Dhaka Medical College and earned MD degree from BSMMU (the then IPGM,R). She also obtained Clinical Fellowship Training from the Institute of Child Health, London, UK in 2001.

Alongside being professor of Paediatric Neurology, she is the founder and director of the Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder and Autism (IPNA), the only institute of BSMMU in Bangladesh. IPNA is a pioneer institute operates in national level and aims to provide a better and inclusive environment for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and autism.

Prof. Shaheen has more than 20 years working experience in the Paediatric neurology and neurodevelopmental disorder including autism. Her main areas of research are epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders including Cerebral Palsy, Autism, ADHD.

Recently, a study on ‘Prevalence of Autism in Rural Bangladesh’ has been done by her as Principal Investigator. Currently, IPNA is doing a large-scale survey under the supervision of Prof. Shaheen titled, “Nation-wide Survey on Young Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Bangladesh – 2017”.

She has done original research work in the field of Paediatric Neurology and Autism. She has published near 50 papers in various peer reviewed journals both in national and international arena.
