ASSESSMENT

NDA clinic provides specialist care in the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. It starts with taking history with an emphasis on antenatal, natal and postnatal history and developmental history. Any particular concerns of the parents are always taken into special consideration. Assessments are carried out in the following areas – gross and fine motor, cognitive development, speech and language development, visual-perceptual skills, social skills and hearing assessments. Both formal and play-based assessment is undertaken by the Developmental Paediatrician/Paediatric Neurologist, Developmental Psychologist and Developmental Therapists. The length and complexity of these assessments will depend on the individual child.  In some cases, medical investigations like EEG and also neuroimaging will be suggested, which may be carried out at the centre or at University. The findings help in diagnosing the associated impairments which is necessary to offer therapy and behavioural management. ‘Baseline’ measure prior to medical intervention is also used to compare the measures taken after treatment and find out whether the treatment has been helpful. Medical and neurological examinations are also done here. After assessment is over and medical treatment is given –individual care plans for children with multiple impairments are prepared for availing ‘Developmental therapy’ in the ‘Developmental therapy clinic’. Children from this clinic are referred to Ophthalmology, ENT and Orthopaedic departments for further evaluation and management and follow up. Children with behavioral problems are referred to our ‘Child Psychology clinic’. Close liaison is also maintained with department of Psychiatry, which has a child psychiatry programme in the same University.
